Two specialised generals each leading a split stack can do more for the army than 1 main general with all the units and a lonely second general trailing along behind.
However, once you get a little further into the game, your options for specialisation expand. In the early game it can feel a bit goofy as you really dont have enough unit types / generals skills to gain anything from splitting up generals. So getting back to the point of only one general per stack gaining experiance, I think it makes sense. For example, you could have all melee infantry and Ashigaru with a Stand and Fight / Ashigaru Commander, all your cavelry with a Cavelry Commander / Legendary Warrior, etc. In this way, you can have several generals specialised into different skills leading different groups of the army. Reinforcing generals do not affect the main stack (excpet via influence) and vice versa. Now when a reinforcing army is lead by a second general, that second general will apply his bonuses to the units in his stack. This means no command / honor bonus to morale, no retainer bonuses, no skill point bonuses, etc. Normally, when a stack without a general appears as a reinforcement, the units do not get any benafit from the main general besides the influence radius morale buff.
